The Climate Action Coalition held its first roundtable this week, bringing together climate leaders from across the private sector, academia, and civil society organisations to discuss how non-state entities be better involved in implementing the NDCs and how their impact can be amplified. Led by Chair of the Coalition, The Rt Hon Chris Skidmore OBE, and Catherine McKenna, Chair of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Expert Group on Net-Zero Commitments of Non-State Entities, it convened alongside the Sustainable Investment Forum North America during Climate Week New York.
As a competitive swimmer, Canada’s former Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Chair of the UN’s Integrity Matters report, Catherine opened the discussions sharing what swimming has taught about confronting the climate challenge and candidly discussed the challenges and opportunities for non state entities in delivering their net zero pledges and implementing the forthcoming NDCs. The lively event went on to look at the benefits of cross-sector and cross-border collaboration, with participants making a number of really useful suggestions for the Coalition going forward – to break down siloes, amplify best practice and accelerate impact.
