UK Clean Power Taskforce

The Electric Economy: Creating Consensus, Communicating Change

Why This Taskforce and its Report Matters

The UK has set itself one of the most ambitious clean power targets of any major economy, an 81% reduction in emissions and a fully decarbonised power system by 2030. Delivering on that promise requires more than political will. It requires investment, infrastructure, and critically public confidence. Underpinned by newly commissioned Ipsos MORI data for King’s College London, the report found that clear, consistent, and better-attuned communication about the benefits of the energy transition is essential. Framing the transition in terms of economic resilience, energy security, and long-term public prosperity will be critical to maintaining durable consensus at a pivotal moment for the UK’s energy future. Spanning industry, housing and buildings, and transport, the report’s case studies demonstrated where electrification is already delivering tangible benefits — reducing costs, improving lives, and unlocking new economic opportunities. The argument is straightforward: political parties must seize the opportunity to find common ground on the shared goal of delivering cheaper, more reliable power.

What the Taskforce Heard

In informing the Report, the Taskforce drew on evidence from some of the leading experts in UK energy:

  • Dan McGrail, CEO, GB Energy
  • Chris Stark, Head of Mission Control
  • Emma Pinchbeck, CEO, Climate Change Committee
  • Nick Winser CBE , Energy Commissioner, National Infrastructure Commission

What the Taskforce Addressed

The Taskforce examined four interconnected challenges facing the UK’s clean power transition.

  • De-Risking Supply Chains: How collaboration can address shortages in manufacturing capability and build resilient supply chains.
  • Closing the Skills Gap: How the UK can build capabilities, develop talent, and upskill its workforce for the energy transition.
  • Streamlining Permitting: How policy and regulatory reform can accelerate permitting and approvals for clean energy projects.
  • Mobilising Public and Private Finance: What proactive measures can address limited financial resources and unlock investment at scale.

Report launched in January 2026

The UK Clean Power Taskforce Report was launched in January 2026, contributing practical insight and real-world evidence to support the UK Government’s mission to decarbonise the country’s power system by 2030. Overseen by Mission Control for Clean Power, that ambition demands a surge in investment, rapid scaling of clean energy projects, and the removal of barriers at speed. This report was developed to help meet that challenge, bringing together stakeholders from the UK and overseas to share knowledge, best practice, and actionable solutions.
